Botox Vs. Filler: What Is The Difference?

Most people wish they could bottle up their youth and hold onto it forever. Well, we have good news: It can be bottled up and safely injected right into your skin. >>

Q&A on Injectables Botox and Filler

Botox (e.g., BOTOX COSMETIC®) and fillers (e.g., JUVEDERM®) are popular injectables for anti-aging. However, it can be confusing to figure out the difference between them, and people often don’t realize which injectable treatment they actually want. That’s why it’s important to come in for a consultation before booking an injectable treatment at our clinic. We want to work with you to create a treatment plan that will help you look and feel your (youngest) and best.

In the meantime, we want to give you all the information you need to know before your first BOTOX COSMETIC® and/or JUVÉDERM facial filler treatment.

Seventy-two percent of people felt that non-surgical aesthetics boosted their confidence. Injectables continue to be some of our most-requested treatments because, to put it simply, people always want to look younger. And it’s possible with injectables. Book a FREE consultation

JUVÉDERM® FACIAL FILLER

What are facial fillers? How do they work?

Fillers are injectable treatments that can shape and contour many areas of the face. It’s a common anti-aging treatment to restore fullness and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. As we age, we may begin to lose fat and fullness in the face. Facial fillers can plump up the areas that have sunken to create a more youthful appearance. When used with precision, filler can soften, smooth, define, illuminate, and balance the skin on your face for a more beautiful, natural-looking appearance.

JUVÉDERM® is the world’s leading brand of hyaluronic acid facial fillers. JUVÉDERM® fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our skin. It’s derived from plants, so no animal products are used.

The treatment is usually over within 30 to 60 minutes.

What does it treat?

  • It hydrates the skin.
  • It adds volume to lift your temples and/or cheeks.
  • It plumps your lips and refines your lip shape.
  • It contours your chin and jawline.
  • It smooths lines around the eyes and mouth.
  • It lifts and projects eyebrows.
  • It improves the under-eye area.

Does it hurt?

Our medical cosmetic injectors ensure your comfort. In areas where a high degree of precision is required, we transfer the filler into smaller needles before we inject it.

We may avoid using needles altogether and use a micro-cannula to place the filler instead. The micro-cannula is sometimes called the “ouchless needle” because it’s small and the tip is rounded. The value of the blunt tip is that it is comfortable and the risk of bruising and damage to the skin is minimal.

All of Skinpossible’s fillers have the built-in numbing agent, lidocaine, for maximum comfort. Learn more about our Facial Fillers treatment >>

What is the before and after care?

Before:

  • Book a consultation with us.
  • Do not drink wine, take anti-inflammatory medications, fish oil, multivitamins, green tea, cinnamon, or ginger for at least one week before. (Same protocol as neuromodulators.)
  • Stop all anti-aging skincare products containing tretinoin (Retin-A, Stieva-A), retinol, retinoid, glycolic acid, or other exfoliating agents.
  • Don’t shave, wax, thread, or pluck the hair on the area being treated.
  • Take arnica or eat fresh pineapple to reduce bruising.
  • Arrive at the appointment without makeup.

After:

  • Apply an ice pack or cold compress.
  • Avoid applying makeup for the first 12 hours.
  • For two weeks after the treatment, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or UV rays, freezing temperatures, saunas or steam baths, massaging the area, or putting pressure on it.

Is it safe? Any harmful long-term effects? “I don’t want to look botched!”

Getting filler is a safe procedure for all skin types and colours. The right medical injector will make sure you look natural and feel great. You’ll see the best results when you combine fillers with other treatments like BOTOX COSMETIC®.

If you are unhappy with the look, the hyaluronic acid filler can always be dissolved with small injections of an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

How long do results last?

Usually, results last between nine and 24 months, depending on the chosen treatment and product. However, there are many variables, so it’s challenging to give an exact timeline.

The degree of movement in the filled area plays a role. For example, filler in areas with more activity, such as the lips, will metabolize faster than filler in areas that move very little such as the cheeks, temples, jawline, or orbits of the eyes.

Who is qualified to inject filler?

A highly skilled medical injector requires years of continuing education, intricate knowledge of facial anatomy, and a steady hand. Our expert medical injectors are highly experienced and undergo continuous training to remain at the forefront of the industry. Beyond their medical expertise, our health-care providers also have a sharp eye for aesthetics, ensuring you get favourable, natural-looking results.

Why is it important to schedule a consultation first?

A consultation with a medical professional is essential to deliver a customized treatment plan that can help you achieve your goals. This will ensure you get the most attractive results possible. You will look just like yourself—only better!

BOTOX COSMETIC®

What exactly is Botox? How does it work?

Botox is actually a brand name. There are many different types of neuromodulators, but we’re focusing on BOTOX COSMETIC® because it’s the brand most requested by name and the No. 1 bestselling neuromodulator in the world.

BOTOX COSMETIC® is a purified protein that is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles. It relaxes the muscles and prevents them from moving to give your face a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

A BOTOX COSMETIC® treatment is quick and easy, with no downtime. After doing a consultation with your medical injector to determine your desired outcome, they will inject a tiny amount of BOTOX COSMETIC® with a fine needle into the muscle being treated. The treatment is over within 30 minutes, and you’ll begin to see results as soon as 24 hours later. The fine lines may continue to fade up to one week afterwards.

What does it treat?

BOTOX COSMETIC® most commonly treats forehead lines, glabellar (frown) lines, and crow’s feet. We can inject BOTOX COSMETIC® in places other than the face—just ask the cosmetic injector. BOTOX COSMETIC® is also known for treating migraines or hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), which is a common reason for getting the treatment.

Does it hurt?

BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments are virtually painless.

What is the before and after care?

Before:
    • Do not drink coffee or caffeine 24 hours in advance. Coffee contains caffeine, which may trigger your blood pressure and increase the likelihood of bruising. For the same reason, do not drink wine, take anti-inflammatory medications, fish oil, multivitamins, green tea, cinnamon, or ginger for at least one week before.

    After:
    • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours after treatment.
    • Don’t put on makeup for four hours after the treatment.
    • Try not to bend down, do any tiring physical exercise, or spend time in a hot tub on the day of treatment.
  • Is it safe? Any harmful long-term effects? “I don’t want to look botched!”
  • It is absolutely safe. According to Allergan, the manufacturer of BOTOX COSMETIC®, 96% of patients were satisfied with the overall effect of more than five years of continuous BOTOX COSMETIC® treatment.

BOTOX COSMETIC® is meant to enhance your look, not change it. We aim to give our patients the most natural-looking results so you can still smile, frown and be expressive.

    How long do results last?

The effects of BOTOX COSMETIC® can last up to four months. To maintain your results, we recommend getting BOTOX COSMETIC® at least three times a year.

Since BOTOX COSMETIC® is temporary, you’ll need to be consistent with scheduling your next assessment and space them at least 90 days apart.

Who is a candidate for BOTOX COSMETIC®?

Any healthy individual over the age of 18 who is not pregnant or nursing is a candidate for BOTOX COSMETIC®.

Who is qualified to inject BOTOX COSMETIC®?

Any medical professional can be qualified to inject BOTOX COSMETIC®. Ask about their training, background, and experience level—it’s more important than the medical degree they hang on their wall.

Our expert medical team is highly trained and experienced in aesthetic injections, so you can trust that you'll be in good hands. Learn more about Neuromodulators >>
